Mars city technical services and maintenance

The city is a complex structure providing many different services to its citizens. Starting from basic air support up to administration and planning services.


City – as it grows from simple post up to megapolis – is providing more and more additional functionality and improvements - each of them requires new type of servicing and maintenance approach. They require SPACE. Which we will never see it in popular TV series. They are not that interesting, thou their proper work is crucial for living. So, if you see in a TV show or film a small living area inside and outside you may observe huge amount of facilities – this is it: the space “wasted” for equipment, vehicle bays, storages, factories, workshops, reactors, energy and resource processing centers


There is a big area concerning public services such as government, administration and city planning, courts, tax collection, social support, greenery maintenance etc. The list of services mostly depends on organization method of the city, its political and economic situation.


Below I propose a MUST BE list of basic services and their functionality – please feel free to comment and extend. The list below is based on my subjective “time-to-kill” factor. I doubt that any other classification may apply independently on size of the city.

  • Air handling, heating and water supply

  • Electricity and Sewerage and sewage treatment plant

  • Communication

  • Food production and distribution

  • Transport

  • Waste collection

  • Basic production and distribution

  • Medical service

  • Security/police

  • RedTeam - emergency

This post will cover a few of them:


Air handling, heating and water supply

By the air handling I mean not only production and recycling. There is a big problem with development of mold and other types of fungi - which are strictly connected to our biology. Therefore I would say that air handling is more than basic breathable oxygen support. It should be developed as overall climate control. Varying on quality on different functionalities (living and working spaces require much more strict control in contrary to storages and vehicle bays). Facilities must be located in most protected areas, with very good access, but due to possible explosion hazard, they should be located away from residential areas.


Small city will definitely start from ice mining and melting facilities. Then if actually the water is found - water mining, pipelines, treatment and distribution facilities must be constructed.


Electricity and Sewerage and sewage treatment plant

I still have the thought that electricity and sewerage should be placed in the same line as air handling and water. They are almost as important as those above. At the end, I decided to list them separately as lack of power or sewerage handling will not be so destructive to living creatures.


The power plant can be located anywhere convenient – close to thorium mining site. All we have to provide - are well protected cables to the city transformer stations. The big advantage of this system is the flexibility and considerable small size of components. We may limit the size of junction boxes to minimum - up to built-in corridor panels.


Opposite is the sewerage system. Sewage is a gravitational system. This network is the only one, out of crucial living systems, that is not flexible doe to its dependency on gravitation (if cheap construction method approach is taken). It may have great influence to the future plan of the city – therefore a very careful and thoughtful design is required. Once done – stays for ages.


So in conditions of lower gravity –steeper slopes must be used. Also location of sewage points must be defined at the beginning of the construction of each part of a functional hub and district.


I presume that one sewage treatment plant can be provided for 20-30 thousand people. The bigger the city – the more plants must be constructed. I imagine that, even with the most sophisticated technology, there will be no 100% processing ratio for sewage. (See next posts on waste collection and management).


I also think of a definition of “gray water”: As of today, the definition allows all types of sewage, except toilet water, to be treated as a grey water. Yet, I would hesitate to see that way. Multi flat residential areas are one of the main sources of bacteria and in fact such water may carry as much biological hazard as typical toilet sewage. Therefore almost all the “gray water” must be treated as normal toilet sewage. This simplifies the system, but reduces effectiveness.
