Have you ever considered what stands behind your bill for electricity or water? How does it happen that your sink produces a constant stream of water? There are networks of services, starting from the source, through complicated distribution network, till your final meter. A protrusion in any of the single moment will make your life harder.

So an army of people is watching constantly each part of each network. The basics are – water, sewage and electricity. Sometimes it is a heating and gas as well.

Some are really necessary for you to survive (like water or heating) while, lack of electricity for 2-3 days may be highly uncomfortable, but it will not kill you.

Now. On Mars, you must add breathable air for the surviving list. Any single protrusion in such system, results in massive death toll.

We can divide the maintenance work into two essential directions: data gathering/decision making and technical support/repair activities.

To provide services constantly on top level the whole city must be equipped with huge number of sensors, which provide proper and continuous information. The information must be gathered and processed in a maintenance center. I see such maintenance center to be divided into small units - for each part of the city/district, so tasks can be realized smoothly. Those may be coordinated by highly secured global maintenance center. Today buildings designed with smart home systems monitoring (as we think) almost all parameters - are just highly simplified variants of what must be implemented into the City infrastructure. After all, the city on Mars is going to be a highly computerized machine rather than just a simple collection of volumes to live. This of course reduces the privacy, but in the end may be a life saving issue.

Second part of the maintenance process is physical intervention. Commonly it is done by technicians and workmen. They conserve and repair issues as per internal instructions and regulations, traveling all along the network.

So let’s imagine how such work may be organized on Mars in 2150? No human being is able to process that number of data and act accordingly. People are able only to observe the flow of main data balance. Only AI is able to provide deep data analysis and reaction on time. The reaction time is crucial for surviving of the citizens, so in my opinion the help of AI in coordination is beyond discussion.

The other part of maintenance process may be also organized and coordinated by AI. People may not be involved at all in minor repairing and technical support. It can be done with multifunctional robots. So robots’ bays must be provided in the city maintenance centers, as well as technical workshops for people.

I think that most of the work can and will be conducted automatically, but some of the long term decisions and constant control must be held by human beings – just for sake of the programmers flaws.

The key question is: how far are we ready to entrust our lives to AI?
